El Servicio de Repatriación y Canje de Prisioneros gestionó demandas de repatriación, canje e internamiento de prisioneros en países neutrales. Hay que distinguir entre repatriación e internamiento. El repatriado debía ser un herido grave, inválido en potencia, que no podría ya nunca servir a su patria en el campo de batalla. En cuanto al internamiento en país neutral, se trataba generalmente de un herido grave que necesitaba cuidados constantes. Sin embargo, gran número de estos prisioneros podrían volver a tomar las armas, por lo que debían permanecer en un país neutral, principalmente Suiza, hasta el final de la Guerra.
