El buque de carga Gutenfels fue botado en Alemania en 1905. Al comienzo de la Primera Guerra Mundial fue capturado por el Almirantazgo británico y pasó a llamarse Polavon. En 1915 fue vendido a Anglo-Saxon Petroleum Co. Ltd y renombrado Turritella. El 26-02-1917 partió de Colombo (Sri Lanka) y a principios de marzo fue capturado por el crucero auxiliar alemán SMS Wolf, haciendo prisionera a su tripulación. Fue reconstruido como un crucero auxiliar y renombrado SMS Iltis. El 05-03-1917, mientras colocaba un campo minado en el Golfo de Adén, fue perseguido por buques de guerra británicos. La tripulación logró hundirlo para evitar la captura. Todos fueron salvados y tomados prisioneros
