Pintor barroco español. Hijo de Juan van der Hamen, flamenco noble nacido en Bruselas y llegado a España antes de 1586 como miembro de la Guardia de los Archeros Reales. Su madre era la hija de un archero, Jacob Whitman, quien por su parte había casado con una señora española de equivalente rango social, Marta Gómez de León, de antiguo linaje toledano. El artista heredaría de su padre la plaza de archero del Rey. Sus dos hermanos mayores, uno de ellos sacerdote, eran escritores y miembros de la elite intelectual de la ciudad. Los tres hermanos, así como sus descendientes, quisieron enfatizar sus raíces hispanas al utilizar en su totalidad o en parte el Gómez de León como su segundo apellido.
Falleció inesperadamente en 1631.
