Su padre y su abuelo murieron en la batalla de Aljubarrota.
En 1411 ingresó en el monasterio benedictino de San Benito de dicha ciudad, del que llegaría a ser prior en 1423.
Gozó de gran relación con Juan II, siendo uno de los compromisarios designados para juzgar sobre el alejamiento de Álvaro de Luna en 1427.
Fue reformador de los monasterios de Castilla
