Reformador de las comunidades mendicantes, junto a Císneros y Francisco Desprats. Fue el protector de Cristobal Colón.
Nació en el seno de una acomodada familia de Toro, por entonces una de las ciudades más nobles y principales del antiguo reino leonés, cuna de no pocas celebridades, tanto seculares como eclesiásticas, y lugar de acontecimientos importantes, sobre todo en la época de los Reyes Católicos, reinado en el que Deza vivió la mayor parte de su vida y en el que influyó decisivamente
